Search our funeral directors directory by town or postcode. Shortlist two or three firms and ask for a written estimate for the same type of funeral.

Questions worth asking

  • What is included in a simple or direct funeral?
  • Which costs are third-party disbursements?
  • Can we visit the chapel of rest?
  • Do you support green, woodland or faith-specific funerals?
  • Who will be our main point of contact?

Membership and standards

Look for recognised trade bodies and clear complaint procedures. Reviews help, but speak to the team yourself.

What “good” looks like in a first conversation

A calm funeral director will listen before selling. Ask how they price a simple funeral versus a more personal ceremony, whether they can hold the person locally, and how they support families who want a direct cremation or a fuller service. Clear written estimates matter more than a polished brochure.

If you feel rushed, that is useful information. You are allowed to speak to more than one firm. NAFD or SAIF membership is a helpful signal, but local reputation and how they treat you on the phone still count.

  • How soon can viewing happen if the family wants it?
  • Who will be our day-of contact?
  • Can you work with our celebrant / faith leader / venue?
  • How do disbursements (crematorium, doctors’ fees, flowers) appear on the invoice?
